ORIGIN
Lidar (laser detection and ranging) is a surveying method that measures distance to a target by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflected light with a sensor. Differences in laser return times and wavelengths can then be used to make precise digital 3D representations of the target. Lidar is using light whereas radar is with radio waves and sonar with sound propagation.
EVOLUTION
Until recently, Lidar was mostly use for autonomous vehicle applications. The accuracy of detection and classification as well as the possibility to combine Lidar with videosurveillance products brings a new range of application if the world of security.
The LiDAR 3D solution offers around 98% accuracy, which reduces costs by maintaining a low rate of false alerts.

LIDAR VS OTHER SENSING TECHNOLOGIES
Radars and cameras cannot accurately measure the physical environment in 3D and their performance can be greatly affected by certain weather conditions.
Although cost-effective, most camera surveillance systems
- have limited range
- are unable to function properly in all weather conditions
- have limited accuracy
